A great weekend for a duck!
We arrived at our destination, not at 1:00am as planned, but at 3:00am due to a detour to Rochester International Airport to pick up Ms Kim. The key was left in our door at Seneca Lodge as promised but there was no key for Kim's room. Obviously both Kim and I had a misspent youth as it took no time at all to jimmy the window and crawl through. Staff were somewhat surprised that the room was occupied and we explained it away by saying the door was ajar. I don't think they believed us, but what the heck.
The next morning Kim and Linda were busy preparing all the paper work to open registration at 2:00pm. and I
was sort of at loose ends with not a whole lot to do but hang around. My boredom was saved when Jack pulled into the parking lot with this little gem. Off we went to the local Wal Mart to pick up a few of lifes necessities........BEER! How many cases of beer can you get into a Ford GT40........NONE! Well I guess maybe one, but with pop and other sundry nibblies, the beer was relegated to the rollbar. Jack wanted to go to Hammondsport to check out the Curtis Museum, and given the trip was to be made in the GT40, it seemed like a good idea to tag along. Now, first off, I am the worlds worst passenger and have very little
trust in other drivers ability save my own. Within a short time I was very comfortable with Jacks driving, even at speeds that approached suicidal. The trip to Hammondsport was quite uneventful, meaning we didn't get thrown in jail for breaking the sound barrier on the ground.
The Curtis Museum was a great tour and I would highly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in aviation. The trip back was carried out in the same blur as the trip to Hammondsport. At a point not too far outside of Watkin's Glen, Jack turned "The Beast" over to me to pilot the remaining few miles to the lodge. Things were going swimmingly until the downhill approach into town. With a splutter and a cough, the fuel tank gave up it's last remnant of gasoline and we coasted to a stand still just yards from the main street. Now, if you want to see something amusing, picture two 60 plus year old farts pushing a GT40 four blocks to a gas station. Gimme a bucks worth of your best! Right.
It was a great week/weekend up until midday Saturday when the skies opened and the fog rolled in. Most of the events were run in the rain but a few heats were cancelled due to fog. All in all a good time was had by all and after a leisurely Monday morning breakfast at the lodge, we were on our way home. Uneventful and arrived in one piece.
Our bathroom is finished, the contractor is gone, I have my garage back and The Banana is now visible and beckoning to be worked on. A few modelling projects to clean up, two more race events and I may get to do some serious work by the end of October.
